Job function: The primary function of the cable technologies group is to develop implementations (software-controlled hardware modules) of the cable network interface physical layer for integration into the company’s ever increasing range of HFC (Hybrid Fibre/Coax) subscriber terminals. The group acts as an internal supplier to company’s HFC product development teams, and as such provides expert, specialist resource to these teams at all stages of the product life cycle, from initial specification and project planning through development, testing, customer acceptance, manufacture and deployment. The emphasis is on using leading edge technology to produce efficient, low cost designs for high volume manufacture. Key Tasks: The role of Principal RF Engineer within the group is wide-ranging, and includes: ‘hands on’ research and development of broadband tuner/demodulator/modulator hardware modules including specification, planning, architectural/system design, modelling, preparation of schematics, test/verification, documentation etc. Liaison with customers, suppliers, partners and other departments within Pace. Evaluation of new technologies and architectures; development of technology roadmaps and IP Tracking/driving appropriate open standards initiatives. Analysis of competing products and technologies. Supervising, coaching and mentoring less experienced members of the group. Qualifications/Training: Qualifications: Honours degree in appropriate subject e.g. electronic engineering. At least 5 years appropriate industrial experience. Key Skills: Excellent knowledge of RF receiver architecture and design, preferably with experience relating to broadcast or cable TV systems. Excellent knowledge of RF system and circuit modelling from DC to 1GHz. Excellent knowledge of relevant RF circuit design and PCB layout techniques. Excellent knowledge of RF test equipment and measurement techniques. Good understanding of digital communication systems at the physical layer: previous experience with DVB, OpenCable and/or DOCSIS systems desirable. Good understanding of Analogue TV systems (PAL/NTSC). Proven experience of design for high volume manufacture. Strong analytical skills Basic understanding of multi-tasking embedded software environment; some experience of embedded programming in C desirable. Good understanding of EMC issues and design techniques Good oral and written communication and negotiation skills. Ability to supervise, coach and inspire junior team members. Experience: Personal Qualities: The experience & knowledge necessary to command the respect of the Product Development teams and other members of the Cable Technologies Team. Always willing to provide detailed technical information where necessary whilst also being able to explain issues in a manner that can be understood by members of staff not trained in RF Technology. Able to make considered "judgement calls" on technical issues when there may not be a clear and definite set of data available. Clear, concise and pragmatic approach to engineering.
