Reporting to: Lead Hardware Engineer/Project Manager/ Hardware Design Manager
Job purpose: To work as part of the Development team.Generate innovative, cost effective and reliable HW and system level solutions to meet product and customer specifications within agreed time scales. Generate comprehensive system level documentation and specifications, which conform to the Development Process.
Principal responsibilities:
Create Hardware and system level designs, which conform to the product requirements and customer specifications. Generate system level and HW documentation for proposed designs in line with the development Process. Produce hardware and system level designs that ensure that the Annual Failure Rate of the overall product is as low as possible commensurate with acceptable cost and performance. Ensure the HW is fully tested, debugged & qualified prior to the product sign off in accordance with the Development Process. Undertake schematic generation, circuit analysis, validation of hardware and system level designs utilising the Company specified hardware design tools. Produce breakdowns and task estimates for new projects and systems, assisting the Project Management Team to ensure the project plan is both realistic and achievable. Participate in and contribute to design and project reviews, to chair reviews in the absence of the Lead Hardware Engineer. Provide maintenance support for existing designs ensuring prompt rectification of problems. Contribute to the promotion and improvement of the Product Development Process, continually review the working methods, practices as set out in the Development Procedure to ensure the most efficient operation. Act as a guide for junior engineers. Develop specialist technical knowledge and skills that are relevant to the Company's core business.
Knowledge and experience:
HND/Degree in Engineering or related subject. Will have several years of hardware design & development experience. In-depth knowledge of hardware design & analysis tools and layout techniques for analogue and high-speed circuits. Will have completed several multi-disciplined projects involving hardware reliability, EMC issues. Should have detailed component knowledge including technology roadmaps for product critical technologies. Display the ability to influence system level design to achieve the company defined field failure rate. Have experience assisting in the development of junior engineers. Possess excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and reporting skills. Should be experienced in prioritising workloads.
Personal Qualities:
A highly motivated individual with demonstrated technical abilities in both HW & system level design. A logical and systematic approach to hardware design and problem solving. Able to work independently or as an integral member of a team and to supervise the work of other engineers as appropriate.Should be approachable and be an excellent communicator on both technical and non-technical matters with the ability to communicate with all levels both internal and external to the Company. Should able to prioritise their own workload
