Electrical Design Engineer

Duties
Ø To provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the client.
Ø Work closely with internal & external scientific and engineering staff to produce electrical designs for projects including, motion control for optical systems, vacuum control systems for vessels & beam tubes, safety interlock systems for personnel protection and electrical installations for buildings and experimental areas including power distribution, lighting, telecoms, HVAC, etc.
Ø Develop and apply expertise in technologies such as : Programmable logic controllers, Sensors, actuators and encoders.
Ø Use of Computer Aided Design software package AutoCAD.
Ø Procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers.
Ø Supervision of internal and contract design staff and control of quality.
Ø Contribute to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises.
Ø Maintain and update engineering drawings and documentation on projects.
Ø Work within DLS procedures and contribute to their development.
Qualifications and Experience: Essential
The successful candidate is likely to have the following skills and experience.
Ø HNC or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
Ø Ability to provide ideas and creative solutions to design problems.
Ø Good working knowledge of a CAD system with at least 5 years fulltime experience.
Ø Self motivated and with ability and initiative to get to the heart of a problem and see it through to completion.
Ø Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
Ø Good background in electrical engineering.
Ø Excellent working knowledge of engineering drawings and working to specifications for controls and electrical designs.
Ø Experience of working in a team, discussing work with other team members and presenting ideas and solutions to engineers or customers.
Ø Background in the use of computers and data handling including Microsoft office systems, Word, Excel, Power Point, Project and MathCad.
Ø Good working knowledge of AutoCAD.
Ø Must be available to travel on work related business with occasional overnight stays.
Ø Light manual tasks may be involved during commissioning.
Qualifications and Experience: Desirable
Ø Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
Ø Technical Apprenticeship.
Ø Engineering Council registration and membership of relevant professional body.
Ø Ability to lead, motivate and manage internal and contract staff.
Ø Some appreciation of electrical calculations packages.
Ø Experience of supervising design office work.
Ø Experience of working within a QA system.
Ø Good appreciation of project management.
Ø Experience of overseeing manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of systems.
Ø Competence in two or more of Motion control, safety interlock systems, electrical installations for buildings and experimental equipment, including, power distribution, lighting, telecoms, HVAC, etc. PLC`s, sensors, actuators, encoders and vacuum technology.
Ø Holds a Driving Licence.
